well myself i like to use the mindsensors.com PS2 Controller Adapter. For $35 US it is in my opinion not a bad price, and a controller will set you back another $20. very easy to use and program, and you can use the same program for most things

If you have 2 NXTs, simple NXT to NXT remote control is the easiest solution. I have the NXT-G programs and stuff for that here:

Of course, it has been asked if turning $500 USD worth of LEGOs into a RC car worth $40 is worth it... but I think it is!
Ya i agree that the best possible remote would be NXT to NXT, but if you are like me i have to have 2 robots built at the same time.
